After serving his mission in Toronto Canada (2014-15) for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Jake Mangakahia's ballet career has once again gained momentum dancing classically with the Australian Ballet. The ballet has been incredibly supportive of Jake’s taking leave from the ballet for his two-year mission service. They have been pleased with his endeavours thereafter to connect the stories of people and cultures through dance.
Jake belongs to the Melbourne 2nd Branch (congregation) of the Church, in the heart of downtown Melbourne, but is often on tour with the Australian Ballet Company. He most recently performed Sleeping Beauty and Giselle in Beijing, Nanjing and Shanghai China.
Jake was featured 3 November on the Morning Show, Channel 10 in Sydney. He showcased a little of his debut principal role as the lead dancer in the current Australian Ballet Season of Spartacus at the Sydney Opera House. The season continues until Nov 24th.
Spartacus is the story of a gladiator’s challenge and revolt against the Roman Empire. Jake has worked extremely long hours to be both physically and mentally prepared for this role.
This year Jake also has reason to celebrate the wonderful heritage of his family. Jake is the great grandson of Mere Te Ti Mangakahia, the first Maori woman to stand in Parliament to speak on behalf of women's right to vote. This marks the year of the suffragette in New Zealand. With his strength and determination to connect stories and culture through dance, Jake is continuing this powerful legacy.
